PROJECT OVERVIEW

Accident rates and traffic congestion at the Domersville Road intersection are two problems along the US 24 corridor.
US 24 in Northwestern Ohio displays all the symptoms of a transportation route in peril. Traffic volume is mounting and levels of service are declining. Travelers face hazardous roadway conditions and motorists often experience delays resulting from congestion and traffic accidents.

These problems are caused by several factors. Traffic volume
exceeds the roadway's capacity, a problem that is compounded by a high volume of truck traffic. The flow of traffic is disrupted by vehicles entering and leaving the traffic stream at side street access points. Unnecessary accidents are caused by a lack of separation between through, turning, and cross-street traffic.

Extensive analysis shows the present two-lane highway is deficient.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is designing a strategy to address the problems on US 24 between Defiance and Napoleon. To be truly effective, the strategy must address some specific goals:

• Improve traffic flow and level of service

• Reduce travel times between State Route 66 and Glenwood Avenue

• Improve safety along the corridor

• Decrease the accident rate at the Domersville Road intersection to below 1.5 accidents per million entering vehicles

• Enhance the principal arterial characteristics of US 24 while preserving access to surrounding communities

• Make provisions for future economic growth
